to consult the orthodontist?

| Your general dentist will refer you or your child to the orthodontist
if it is necessary. Children who do not get regular dental check ups
should be taken to the orthodontist when they are 8 years old for consultation. |

Braces or surgery? |
In most instances where only the teeth need to be corrected, braces
will be able to do the correction. When the problem involves the jaw
bone also, surgery may be required , sometimes along with braces to
correct it.

| Are braces painful ? |

No, braces might cause discomfort during the first week, and immediately
after alterations, but in general, braces are not painful. |

Fixed appliance or removable? |
As to whether one needs to be treated with a fixed appliance or a removable
one depends on the problem one has. Certain changes can only be made
with the fixed sort of appliance.
